“And We have not sent you (O Muhammad) except as a mercy to the worlds."
(Al-Isra: 54)
There is none other person that can claim to be the protector of the poor than our beloved prophet Muhammad PBUH. He didn’t teach us just to perform solat and fasting, but also paying the zakat and do charity to the needy. In one of the hadith recorded:
Narrated Abu Huraira: The Prophet said, "The one who looks after a widow or a poor person is like a Mujahid (warrior) who fights for Allah's Cause, or like him who performs prayers all the night and fasts all the day." (Sahih Bukhari, 64:265)
And in another hadith;
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr: A person asked Allah's Apostle. "What (sort of) deeds in or (what qualities of) Islam are good?" He replied, "To feed (the poor) and greet those whom you know and those whom you don't know." (Sahih Bukhari 2:27)
To look after the poor are one of the virtues of a good Muslim. However, we often see it in the media the people that seriously take the effort to help the needy are the non-Muslims. They did more than just giving money and supplies, some even willing to spent their lives to help these people. Sadly, the countries that frequently visited are Muslim countries.
Islam teaches us to see beyond the boundary of race and nationality, Allah is merciful to all the things, why wouldn’t we? Even if the poor are not Muslims, a little sign of sympathy and kindness is also a form of Dakwah.
The cycle of poverty
The case that it has been in Malaysia and in other countries is that the poor are simply the one that is blamed; usually accused as a bunch of lazy people who are not willing to do anything and spent most of their time sitting on their asses doing nothing. It might be true for some few cases, but in general I have to say this is an irresponsible claim.
Unemployment contributes to poverty, which caused by the lack of education and the absence of industrial activities which provide jobs in most of the third world countries. The life expectancy is very low due to poor healthcare and mortality rate are very high due to wars and natural disasters. Thus, left the children without any supports for food, healthcare and educational fees, and the cycles go on to the next generations.
The cycle of poverty can only be broken down by outsiders, it is almost impossible for them to improve their situation unless some people are willing to help. This is where we come into the picture, by ‘we’ I mean students that are given the opportunity to have well paid professions in the future; Doctors, Engineers, accountants, etc (just name it).
Charity through professionalism
“Those who (in charity) spend of their goods by night and by day, in secret, and in public, have their reward with their Lord: on them shall be no fear, nor shall they grieve.” (Al-Baqara: 274)
We may not have the money to give out to the poor worldwide, but the meaning of rezeki is not restricted to cash or properties but also include intelligence, intellectual, etc. Perhaps this is the opportunity Allah has given to us to serve Him the best, by serving others. Of course we are not yet professionals, in fact most of us are still student, but just to point out the reason that I believe why we need more Muslims professionals for the Ummah.
Engineers are required to design and construct structures and facilities e.g. A shelter, schools, hospitals, clean and reliable supply of water; an appropriate method of dealing with the waste water from the site; and adequate sanitation (toilet facilities). However they are matters to be taken into consideration.
Most of the targeted areas do not have electricity, so the facilities must be able to run without it, or at least uses electricity in few parts of the whole structures. Plus, the design must ensure environmental sustainability. The facilities must be able to operate by the locals instead of skilled engineers. Thus, engineers have to make sure it will last for a handsome of years under the provisions of the locals. The structures must be able to withstand any possible threats of natural disasters. Other than that, the structures are also need to be built with materials that are strong but cheap. These are few challenges engineers have to face in order to establish satisfactory facilities for the poor and the needy.
Food industries can be much of a help. The challenges are to produce food in a large quantity at a low cost and can cater a complete dietary need to the poor. The wide use of enzymes and food enhancers might be one of the solutions. Biotechnology is driving much change, in areas as diverse as agrichemicals, plant breeding for food production. Research in agricultural and food processing technologies happens in great part in university research environments. Future biotechnologist should get involved in this kind of research for the benefit of the needy populations.
Most of the lands in the Africa were left wasted without any agricultural activities due to the problems like erosions, war and mostly the absence of the right tools. The agriculture not just consists of farmers, but also includes scientist and engineers to improve the farming methods and implements thus, to increase the production of food. Moreover, agriculture and food industries can provide employments in those nations.
Health is a main concern in third world countries, where life expectancy is very low and child mortality is very high. "The majority of child deaths are preventable. Some of the deaths occur from illnesses like measles, malaria or tetanus. Others result indirectly from marginalization, conflict and HIV/AIDS. Malnutrition and the lack of safe water and sanitation contribute to half of all these children’s deaths. Almost 11 million children who die each year could be saved by low-tech, evidence-based, cost-effective measures such as vaccines, antibiotics, micronutrient supplementation, insecticide-treated bed nets and improved family care and breastfeeding."[1]
There are a lot more to be listed, but above is suffice to give a good picture of what I am trying to convey. We often pray to Allah so that we past the examinations, get good grades, get the chance to further our studies, get hired in a fancy professions; but do we ever ask why should Allah grants those prayers? Use your gift to the very best to please Allah, as the followers of our beloved prophet Muhammad PBUH, we should be the champions for the poor and the needy worldwide.
Study hard, Study Smart, Study in the name of Allah.
